Toy Inn 1958-1970
Sing Jin Toy Tom's family restaurant was called the Toy Inn. These are his children Richard, Ken and Gloria in May 1958. This area of southwest Baltimore is also known as "Pigtown" as pigs were herded through the streets from the Camden railroad station on Eutaw Street to the Morrell Park Slaughterhouse.
Richard Tom recounts that his father's "business was not negatively impacted by the riots after the assassination of MLK in 1968. The local Black customers noted afterwards that they protected him, because he was good to them. Giving them food when they had no money. He allowed Black customers to eat in the dining room prior to desegregation. As the funeral procession passed by his business, the locals stood at attention on the street to say, "Good bye and thank you."
